Eisemann Center Presents 2026-2027 Season

An insight into the life and teachings of the 13th Century Saint Janabai and the 14th Century Saint Lalleshwari or Lalded as she was fondly called. Both were female mystic poets who went through tremendous hardships before they were finally recognized for their spiritual awakenings. They crossed all barriers of social norms to fearlessly express their love for the supreme. Many real life incidents have had a profound effect on their lives.

Janabai was born in Maharashtra and belonged to the Warkari tradition. Her Marathi Abhangs reflect her clarity of thought and her state of spiritual consciousness. Born in a Sudra family she was a devoted servant maid in the house of the great Saint Namdev.

Lalded's Vakhs or sayings in Kashmiri touched the common man for it's simplicity yet multi layered interpretations. Her Vakhs are a testimony of her deep love and devotion for the supreme. They also reflect the life teachings that she imbibed from a tormenting Mother in law and an indifferent husband.

Janabai was a Vaishnavait while Lalded was a Shaivaite. Janabai believed in the form while Lalded believed in the formless. Janabai took the path of devotion while Lalded took the path of tantra. They both appear to be different, but there is no denying that they were both Mad and Divine.

Mad and Divine was first commissioned by the Mad and Divine Festival held by the Kartik Fine Arts Chennai 2011 curated by Anita Ratnam.
