  • John Pizzarelli with Texins Jazz Band

Texins Jazz Band May // Bank of America Theatre

The Texins Jazz Band has a 40-year history of producing concerts featuring great guest artists. The band is delighted to bring back their guest from their 30th anniversary concert – John Pizzarelli.

John has been hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” The Toronto Star pegged him as “the genial genius of the guitar.” Established as one of the prime contemporary interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Pizzarelli has expanded that repertoire by including the music of Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Antônio Carlos Jobim and the Beatles. In addition to being a bandleader and solo performer, Pizzarelli has been a special guest on recordings for major pop names such as Natalie Cole, Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Wopat, Rickie Lee Jones and Dave Van Ronk, as well as leading jazz artists such as Rosemary Clooney, Ruby Braff, Johnny Frigo, Buddy DeFranco, Harry Allen and, of course, his father Bucky Pizzarelli. He won a Grammy Award in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category as co-producer of James Taylor’s American Standard in 2021.

John is releasing a new album, Dear Mr. Bennett, that pays tribute to Tony Bennett in honor of Tony’ 100th birthday year. The album is the award-winning guitarist and vocalist’s farewell and a celebration to a music legend who brought joy to the world through his timeless music for over seven decades. It’s also a tribute that hits close to home for Pizzarelli, whose father, legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, was a sideman for Bennett, playing on the albums To My Wonderful One (1960) and I’ve Gotta Be Me (1969).

A radio personality who got his start in the medium in 1984, Pizzarelli is co-host, alongside wife Jessica Molaskey, of Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli. He has performed on America’s most popular national television shows such as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Conan, and Great Performances, as well as the talk shows of Jay Leno, David Letterman, Regis Philbin and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Texins Jazz Band is a full 18-piece community big band based in Dallas, TX. The band is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1986 at Texas Instruments in Dallas. The majority of band members have STEM-based degrees and careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). The band is under the musical direction of Bill Centera. Texins Jazz Band is funded in part by the City of Richardson through the City of Richardson Cultural Arts Commission.
