WITH MUSICAL ENSEMBLE MELODY OF CHINA FEBRUARY 27
RICHARDSON, TX – Appearing Friday, February 27 at 8:00 pm in the closing
production of the Eisemann Center’s Hill Performance Hall Spotlight
Series, Melody of China, a Chinese music ensemble based in the San
Francisco Bay Area, was established in 1993 by a group of enthusiastic
professional musicians from some of the most prestigious music
conservatories in China that specialize in Chinese instruments. The
ensemble has a two-fold mission: to promote classical and modern Chinese
music and to provide quality entertainment through the synergy between
an ancient cultural tradition and the youthful, diverse American
culture. To further their vision, Melody of China performs regular
concerts as well as presenting a variety of educational programs for the
schools and the general public.
The ensemble is headed by multi-instrumentalist Hong Wang and other
ensemble members include soloists Yangqin Zhao on Chinese dulcimer; Hai
Pu on percussion; Xian Lu on flute and other wind instruments; Linhong
Li on Chinese lute; Haiyue Zhang on moon guitar and Chinese mandolin and
Gangqin Zhao on various instruments. The Melody of China repertoire
includes Chinese folk songs, classical music, opera, popular music and
instrumental pieces. The group also performs representative pieces from
minorities and other countries as well as Steven Foster’s “Old Folks
Back Home” and “Arkansas Traveler/Hornpipe” played on traditional
Chinese instruments. Melody of China is especially noted for its
outstanding interpretation of pieces for percussion ensemble.
