THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF GABE BARNA
Showing at the Eisemann Center’s Green Mezzanine Gallery January 3-29, 2007

RICHARDSON – Gabe Barna is an amateur photographer living in Dallas for over 30 years. His interest in photography started in 1974 with his participation in the Texas Instruments Camera Club until the group’s demise in 1998. This hobby led to a home darkroom and a love for black and white printing due to its simplicity and the power of a well-composed and printed black and white image.

The Barna family moved to Grenoble, France for a four-year stay from 2000 to 2004. As Barna recounts, “The majesty of the Alps re-kindled my interest in nature photography. I also changed from film to digital photography, and concentrated on the beauty of the mountains and other interesting visual phenomenon available only in old Europe. We wandered around much of Europe, so I had a chance to photograph a wide variety of places and cultures.”

After returning to Dallas in 2004, Barna took classes in Photoshop, and began to generate a portfolio of prints. “My philosophy is to do only minimal adjustments in Photoshop; I believe that the best photographs are “taken” not “digitally manufactured. So I will do a little cropping, sharpening and minor correction in color saturation and contrast, but generally that is the extent of my digital manipulations. I also started using a commercially available plug-in that allows me to apply the matting to the photograph. The matting is colored and textured as appropriate to the picture. This generates a professionally-matted appearance that contributes – in my mind – to the aesthetics of the photograph. This matted format ties together the portfolio in as far as giving all the different prints a similar look. It also has a very practical benefit; since I “mat” the prints to standard size of 11”x14” or 16”x20” (typically), they can be framed in a simple, standard-size frame and still have the appearance of a fully matted photo. Each photo is digitally signed and dated and is printed by a professional lab. Of course, additional and more complex framing can be done by the purchaser of the print and this can further improve the appearance of the piece,” Barna says.
